Shopping Carts Comparison
WebCart was one of the first shopping cart software platforms back in the mid 90's and was designed on a Perl based platform (e.g. CGI scripting) and it used a rare database called mSQL. In 2002, the company was sold to a group of formerly Russian scientists who had each met each other in University in Israel. Each of the 3 scientists had a particular discipline of expertise with regards to mathematics, communication engineering and database development, architecture and design.
After reviewing the CGI platform for 6 months, they decided to abandon the platform and invent an entirely new system using PHP programming with a MySQL database backend. They determined it would be cheaper to use MySQL than to use Oracle because of prohibitive licensing fees. PHP as well is such a robust programming language that many ecommerce providers have adopted this language as the language of choice mostly because it is easy to support.
Instead of upgrading the old WebCart, this team of headstrong old-school type of developers spent 6 months analyzing other solutions like MonsterCommerce, OScommerce, Volusion, YahooStores and dozens of other shopping cart software vendors and they set out to build not only a cheaper solution (because heck everyone wants to be invited to the discount warehouse, right?) but an adaptive solution that could be easily modified and extended at a low cost, not just in money but in time.
The most current result of more than 2 years of 24/7 work, has produced WebCart 11, the first-ever ecommerce platform with content management capability. Not only can you offer a complete set of ecommerce related options to sell products online, but with the same platform you can also have functionality that includes things like a photo gallery, enhanced newsletter system with full tracking capability, an article publishing system, events calendar and soon a blog with rss feeds.
