HTML Tables? It’s time to move on to better design with CSS -Part 1-
If you examine the source code of most web sites you will find that the majority of sites out there use tables in order to layout a desired design. However, I have come to the conclusion that table based design is contributing to poor web design that is not flexible or accessible to many people. I just made a really strong statement about tables therefore, I think it’s only right that I explain what benefits you get from throwing your old table design out the window.
- Your web pages will load faster with divs then they will with tables
- When it comes time to redesign your page the process will be a lot more efficient and if your paying a web designer it will be cheaper
- Your bandwidth will be less which might lower your hosting cost
- The visual consistency of your web site will be be maintained though out your site
- Improve your search engine rankings because now you can place different head elements though out your page while maintaining a professional visual presence
Remember when the web started to evolve? Think back to how ugly web pages looked. Over time the web went though a process as some would say an evolution of sorts to what it has become today. HTML was first used by printers in order to have designers layout their pages before submitting them for print. The web started to use HTML from the get go, but soon found that although html did a fine job in overall layout of a simple site, it did a poor job when the design became a little more complex. Therefore, designers and developers began to use things like image spacers and nested tables. What’s the big deal? Well the trust is these methods work fine except that they add extra weight to your page, and the last time i checked bandwidth was not free.
In my next post I will discuss what the solutions to table based layouts should be.
