Advertising Software to the Right Buyer

by Thom Dickey

The two most widespread methods of selling software are through a store or over the internet. Both methods have their own advantages, not just for the consumer but for the merchant as well. It is to the advantage of consumers to learn about the product, which entails advertisement.

There are advantages and disadvantages to advertising software in a retail store. The main advantage is the presence of a salesperson, who can field questions from the prospective buyer. The buyer may also be attracted by the medium that the software comes on, such as a CD or DVD. The main disadvantage of the retail environment is that there will be other similar products competing for the same customers.

The distribution and advertisement for a product soled online is different from techniques used in stores. advertising software over the internet can be done a lot more consumer specific. The use of marketing software, which for example automatically sends out e-mails to customers who have bought a similar product in the past, is also less expensive. This is one example for the use of ecommerce software to promote a product.

Another way of advertising software online is the use of popup windows. This is an approach which is less personalized. The mass of people being reached through this method compensates for its lack of distinctiveness. It is also cheaper than the use of expensive ecommerce software, the advertiser just pays for the views the advertisement is receiving.

The downside of online advertising is that those who spend a lot of time online have been overstimulated by online ads. The cause is the large - often intrusive - use of ads on a number of web sites. As a result, most people simply tend to ignore the ads online.

A fear which is commonly observed among surfers, which prevents them from clicking on online ads, is the possibility to catch a virus accidentally. This is particularly true as far as advertising software is concerned. Web surfers are more and more afraid of accidentally installing a virus that came boundled with the downloaded software.

As for me, I like to research software on the Internet before I go into the store to purchase it. For that reason, I can be influenced by online advertisements in addition to the ads inside the store.
